Most people cannot identify the symptoms of a concussion

Concussions are a type of traumatic brain injury that can occur from a blow to the head or body. The National Library of Medicine reported that 60% of TBI cases come from road traffic accidents, and many of these cases involve a concussion.

Unfortunately, many people do not realize they have a concussion until matters get worse. It is crucial to recognize the symptoms and seek medical attention immediately.

Physical symptoms

One of the most obvious signs of a concussion is physical symptoms. These can manifest in many ways, including headaches, dizziness, nausea or vomiting, sensitivity to light or noise, and balance problems. A person may also experience blurred vision, ringing in the ears and even seizures. People should pay attention to any changes in their physical state after an accident, even if they seem minor at first.

Mental symptoms

Concussions can also cause mental symptoms that can be harder to recognize but are just as significant. Some common symptoms include confusion, memory loss and difficulty concentrating. Mood swings, anxiety and depression are also common. Ignoring mental symptoms can lead to more severe long-term consequences, including cognitive decline and neurodegenerative diseases.

Sleep disturbances

Another sign of a concussion that many people overlook is sleep disturbances. Concussions can cause insomnia, hypersomnia and other sleep disorders. A person may also experience fatigue or drowsiness during the day, even if they have gotten enough sleep at night.

A concussion can cause long-term damage to the brain and may even lead to permanent disability or death. However, if people are able to identify the symptoms early on, they may be able to combat the problem.
